1) Leavers ~ Lisa Ko (4/5 Stars) (335 of 335 pages) (Familial Bonds, Immigration, Difficult Decisions)

The main characters of this novel are Daniel (Deming) and Polly (Peilan), a son and mother relationship that one day is broken when Deming’s mother does not return home. Leaving Deming in turmoil as to whether or not his mother will return to him, we are led on a journey to his adulthood, where the effects of the abrupt loss of his mother still lingers.

We also explore Polly’s perspective by following her past in her village in Minjiang, China, the events that led to her arrival in New York, along with the pivotal event that would both affect her and her son’s lives. Intertwined with the exploration of the past and present of both Daniel and Polly’s lives, moments of reconciliation and reconnection are interspersed.

I must credit Ms. Ko for writing such a poignant novel through the way she weaved the plotline, which had a comfortable transition from past to present, from Daniel to Polly. Something I enjoyed especially was the narration choice she used for Polly’s perspective, as I rarely see the use of second person perspective, in which I interpret as directing all of Polly’s attention, love and dedication towards Daniel by addressing everything she says to him.
